When there is happiness, it ends. Everything ends. When there are troubles, we seem to think that their ending is a welcome thing. That we were born is something that we can do nothing about. While we are alive, we should try and remember that having a body is not really pleasure or a gift. It is a burden, and there is no relief from that. The one and only resolution is in seeing that we can do nothing about our birth…or death and that we ought to not ask for anything, neither suffering nor freedom from it. As long as we have the capacity to generate a little bit of comfort, we should not ask for more. There is no more. Nothing whatsoever is our call.

In the midst of distress or even pain, seeking solace seems appropriate. However if we keep in mind that we seek all the time, we might come upon the realization that seeking itself is suffering. Want is insufficiency and when pain generates it, perhaps we could choose to pause and not look for resolution. When we just abide, we see that pain and even death is merely an impression.

In just abiding, who abides? Identity is a learnt condition and with its absence, there is no ‘this’ or ‘that’. No seeing, hearing, sensing or feeling. So, no ‘one’ abides, there is just a being. Our logic can be misleading and we might presume it is ‘us’ or ‘them’ or ‘this’ but in abiding without qualification we might start to access a ground that is perfect providence. In it are all eventualities, even the seeking. In being with all eventualities, we learn to want no more than what we just get.

So however we are and whatever there is, we can be at peace. In this equanimity is great strength and the energy for skillful pursuit. Perhaps pain is the summit of acquisition, enabling us to not take recourse even in meaning and sense. The intensity of seeking is greatest with pain and in not wanting its cessation is likely the greatest freedom!

Learning how to just sit with distress has many benefits. The measure of how we are presents no commentary. The resources we have at hand to ease our situation, however, include the commentary we involuntarily engage in. Our measure of how things are though begins as a silent knowing. It is from this silence that distress stems as does joy and excitement. All we really have to do is recognize that this measure is our primary state.

Measure harbors nothing but measure. If we can try to remember that everything downstream is also modified measure we acquire the ability to view all mental events as background and not signals that we have to process or act upon. When we sit with what is aversive, we can learn to thus see that whatever urges a response as well as the response itself are nothing other than a basal state that needs no intervention.

This frees us to be spontaneously and inclusively at ease. We sense, feel and act knowing that this entire movement is really the canvas, not the content and that it is the canvas that extends. All thought, sense and action while being a state of measure therefore start to extend into what is prior to it.
